Who is this course for?

This comprehensive three-day course is designed for employees who have been appointed as workplace first aiders in higher-risk environments or organisations where a more in-depth level of first aid provision is required.

It is suitable for workplaces including manufacturing, construction, engineering, warehousing, agriculture, education, logistics and larger organisations, as well as businesses whose first aid needs assessment identifies the requirement for fully qualified First Aiders.

No previous first aid qualification is required.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider

  • Assess emergency situations quickly and safely

  • Perform adult CPR confidently

  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

  • Manage unconscious casualties

  • Respond to choking emergencies

  • Control severe bleeding and treat shock

  • Recognise and manage fractures, sprains and soft tissue injuries

  • Treat burns and scalds

  • Recognise common medical emergencies including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma and diabetes

  • Record incidents and communicate effectively with emergency services

  • Provide appropriate first aid until professional medical help arrives

This Ofqual-regulated qualification supports compliance with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills you need to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies.

Course topics

The First Aid at Work course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to respond confidently to a wide range of workplace emergencies.

Topics include:

  • The responsibilities of a workplace first aider

  • Assessing incidents and managing priorities

  • Adult CPR

  • Safe use of an AED

  • Recovery position

  • Choking

  • Severe bleeding and shock

  • Minor and major wounds

  • Burns and scalds

  • Fractures, dislocations and soft tissue injuries

  • Head, spinal, chest and abdominal injuries

  • Heart attack

  • Stroke

  • Asthma

  • Epilepsy

  • Diabetes

  • Anaphylaxis

  • Poisoning

  • Eye injuries

  • Incident reporting and casualty handover

Throughout the course, learners participate in realistic practical scenarios designed to build confidence and prepare them for real workplace emergencies.

You'll neeed to achieve the required standard in all assessments to be awarded the qualification.
