Who is this course for?

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for coaches, sports volunteers, PE teachers, fitness instructors, personal trainers, team managers and anyone responsible for the safety and wellbeing of participants during sporting activities.

Whether you work in grassroots sport, schools, gyms, clubs or community organisations, this course provides the practical skills and confidence to respond effectively to injuries and medical emergencies before professional help arrives.

No previous first aid experience is required.

What you’ll learn

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Assess and manage emergencies in sporting environments

  • Perform effective adult CPR

  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

  • Respond to unconscious casualties

  • Manage choking emergencies

  • Recognise concussion and understand current best practice

  • Control bleeding and manage wounds

  • Treat sprains, strains and soft tissue injuries

  • Recognise fractures and dislocations

  • Respond to heat-related illnesses and dehydration

  • Manage asthma attacks, allergic reactions and other medical emergencies commonly encountered during sport

This Ofqual-regulated qualification supports compliance with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

Course Content

What the course covers

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills you need to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies.

Course topics

This practical course focuses on the most common injuries and medical emergencies encountered during sporting activities.

Topics include:

  • Incident assessment

  • The role of the sports first aider

  • Adult CPR

  • Safe use of an AED

  • Recovery position

  • Choking

  • Severe bleeding and wound management

  • Sprains and strains

  • Fractures and dislocations

  • Head injuries and concussion awareness

  • Muscle injuries

  • Heat exhaustion and heat stroke

  • Hypothermia

  • Asthma

  • Anaphylaxis

  • Diabetes and epilepsy

  • Safe casualty management during sporting events

  • Emergency Action Planning (EAP)

  • Communication with emergency services

Throughout the course, learners participate in realistic sporting scenarios designed to build confidence in responding to incidents on the pitch, court, track or training ground.
