Who is this course for?

This course is designed specifically for teachers, classroom assistants, school leaders, office staff, lunchtime supervisors, after-school club staff and anyone responsible for the care and wellbeing of children in an education setting.

Whether you’re working in a primary school, secondary school, nursery, special educational needs (SEN) setting or college, this practical course provides the confidence and skills to respond effectively to the emergencies most commonly encountered in schools.

No previous first aid experience is required.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Assess emergency situations quickly and safely

  • Perform adult and child CPR confidently

  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

  • Help adults and children who are choking

  • Place an unconscious casualty into the recovery position

  • Control bleeding and manage common injuries

  • Recognise and respond to asthma attacks, seizures and diabetic emergencies

  • Manage allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis

  • Recognise signs of concussion and head injury

  • Respond calmly and effectively until emergency services arrive

This Ofqual-regulated qualification supports compliance with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

Course Content

What the course covers

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills you need to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies.

Course topics

This practical course focuses on the first aid situations most frequently encountered by school staff.

Topics include:

  • The role of the school first aider

  • Assessing an emergency safely

  • Calling the emergency services

  • Adult and child CPR

  • Safe use of an AED

  • Recovery position

  • Choking in adults and children

  • Bleeding and wound management

  • Head injuries and concussion awareness

  • Fractures, sprains and strains

  • Burns and scalds

  • Asthma emergencies

  • Severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis

  • Diabetes and hypoglycaemia

  • Epilepsy and seizures

  • Playground and sports injuries

  • Incident reporting and communication with parents and emergency services

Practical scenarios based on real school environments are used throughout the course to help learners develop confidence in responding to emergencies involving pupils, colleagues and visitors.
