Who is this course for?
This course is designed for people who may need to give emergency first aid to a baby or child at work, in voluntary and community activities, or at home.
It is suitable for nursery and early years staff, childminders, teachers and classroom assistants, sports coaches, youth leaders, holiday club staff, parents and carers, and anyone who wants the confidence to respond in an emergency involving a child or infant.
No previous first aid experience is required.
What you’ll learn
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
Understand the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
Minimise the risk of infection to themselves and others
Tell the difference between a child and an infant for first aid treatment
Carry out a scene survey and assess a child or infant casualty
Summon appropriate help when needed
Place a child and an infant in the recovery position and monitor their breathing
Perform CPR and use an AED on a child and an infant
Help a child or infant who is choking
Respond to a child or infant having a seizure
Recognise and treat shock
Control external bleeding
Treat minor injuries, bites and stings
A one-day regulated qualification in emergency first aid for babies and children.

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills you need to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies.
Course topics
This practical one-day course focuses on the emergency first aid skills needed when a baby or child is seriously injured or becomes suddenly ill.
Topics include:
Roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
Infection control
Scene survey and casualty assessment
Recovery position for children and infants
Child and infant CPR
Safe use of an AED
Choking in children and infants
Seizures
Shock
External bleeding
Small cuts, grazes, bumps and bruises
Small splinters and nosebleeds
Bites and stings
Learners build their skills through hands-on practice using child and infant training manikins.
