Who is this course for?

This course is designed for parents, expectant parents, grandparents, babysitters and anyone who regularly cares for babies and young children.

Whether you’re preparing for the arrival of a new baby or simply want the confidence to deal with emergencies at home, this practical and friendly course provides the essential first aid knowledge every family should have.

No previous first aid experience is required.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Recognise when a baby or child requires emergency medical attention

  • Perform infant and child CPR confidently

  • Help a choking baby or child

  • Place an unconscious child into the recovery position

  • Recognise the signs of serious illness

  • Manage burns, bleeding and common childhood injuries

  • Respond to febrile seizures

  • Deal with allergic reactions and anaphylaxis

  • Know when and how to contact emergency services

  • Feel more confident responding to everyday family emergencies

This Ofqual-regulated qualification supports compliance with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

Course Content

What the course covers

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills you need to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies.

Course topics

This practical, family-focused course concentrates on the emergencies parents and carers are most likely to encounter.

Topics include:

  • Assessing an emergency situation

  • Calling for help

  • Infant CPR

  • Child CPR

  • Using an AED in children

  • Choking in babies

  • Choking in children

  • Recovery position

  • Bleeding and wounds

  • Burns and scalds

  • Head injuries

  • Febrile seizures

  • Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis

  • Asthma attacks

  • Meningitis awareness

  • Poisoning

  • Bites and stings

  • Falls and common household accidents

The course includes plenty of hands-on practice using infant and child manikins, giving learners the opportunity to build confidence in a relaxed, supportive environment.
