Who is this course for?

This course is designed for anyone responsible for the care of infants and children, particularly those working in childcare or early years settings.

It is suitable for childminders, nursery staff, preschool practitioners, teachers, teaching assistants, sports coaches, youth leaders, holiday club staff and anyone who requires a recognised paediatric first aid qualification as part of their role.

It is also appropriate for individuals looking to gain the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively to emergencies involving babies and children.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Assess emergency situations involving infants and children

  • Perform infant and child CPR confidently

  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) where appropriate

  • Place an unconscious casualty into the recovery position

  • Respond to choking emergencies in babies and children

  • Control bleeding and manage shock

  • Recognise and respond to common childhood illnesses and medical emergencies

  • Treat burns, fractures, head injuries and allergic reactions

  • Understand safeguarding responsibilities when responding to emergencies

  • Provide effective first aid until emergency services arrive

This Ofqual-regulated qualification supports compliance with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills you need to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies.

Course topics

This comprehensive course combines essential life-saving skills with the knowledge required to respond to a wide range of childhood illnesses and injuries.

Topics include:

  • Roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider

  • Assessing emergency situations

  • Infant and child CPR

  • Safe use of an AED

  • Recovery position

  • Choking in infants and children

  • Bleeding and wound management

  • Shock

  • Burns and scalds

  • Fractures, sprains and soft tissue injuries

  • Head and spinal injuries

  • Asthma

  • Anaphylaxis

  • Meningitis awareness

  • Febrile seizures

  • Diabetes

  • Epilepsy

  • Poisoning

  • Eye, ear and nose injuries

  • Bites and stings

  • Extremes of temperature

  • Incident recording and handover

Learners develop practical skills through realistic scenarios and hands-on practice using infant and child training manikins.

Assessment

How you’ll be assessed

Ongoing trainer assessment is used throughout the course to provide support, monitor your progress and ensure you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve the learning outcomes.

Practical assessment

You'll demonstrate your skills through practical scenarios, observed by your trainer.

You'll complete short multiple-choice assessments to confirm your understanding.

Meet the required standard

You'll neeed to achieve the required standard in all assessments to be awarded the qualification.
