Who is this course for?

This course is designed for anyone who wants to develop the confidence and practical skills to respond to a cardiac arrest or other life-threatening emergency.

It is ideal for workplaces, community groups, schools, sports clubs, volunteers, reception staff, security personnel, customer-facing teams and members of the public. It is particularly valuable for organisations with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on site who want staff to feel confident using it in an emergency.

No previous first aid experience is required.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Recognise the signs of cardiac arrest

  • Assess an emergency situation safely

  • Call the emergency services and provide effective information

  • Perform high-quality adult CPR

  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) safely and confidently

  • Place an unconscious casualty into the recovery position

  • Respond to choking emergencies

  • Understand the importance of early CPR and defibrillation

  • Work effectively with emergency responders until they arrive

This Ofqual-regulated qualification supports compliance with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

Course Content

What the course covers

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills you need to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies.

Course topics

This practical course focuses on the life-saving interventions that make the greatest difference during the first few minutes of a medical emergency.

Topics include:

  • Chain of Survival

  • Recognising cardiac arrest

  • Scene safety and casualty assessment

  • Calling for emergency assistance

  • Adult CPR

  • Hands-only CPR

  • Safe and effective AED use

  • Recovery position

  • Choking

  • Managing an unconscious casualty

  • Working with emergency services

  • Practical CPR and AED scenarios

Learners spend the majority of the course developing hands-on skills using CPR manikins and training AEDs, helping build confidence through realistic practice.

Assessment

How you’ll be assessed

Ongoing trainer assessment is used throughout the course to provide support, monitor your progress and ensure you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve the learning outcomes.

You'll take part in practical activities and realistic scenarios to apply what you've learned.
